NORTH MIAMI, FLA. (WSVN) - A North Miami Police Chief awarded a 7-year-old boy with a bike after he was hit by a car.

Chase Johnson, 7, was walking with his grandparents on Northwest 119th Street in North Miami when he was struck by a car.

“He let go of his grandfather and darted in front of traffic and got hit by one of the vehicles passing by,” said North Miami Police Cmdr. Ralph Estrugo.

Johnson walked away with a broken arm and a few stitches, but after the initial accident, family and police feared the worse.

“I saw him laying in the street,” said Johnson’s grandmother, Charisse Johnson.

However, they believe Johnson’s survival was due to a miracle. “It was heartbreaking,” said North Miami Police Chief Gary Eugene. “I do not care how many years you have in the force, when you have accident with young kids prior to Thanksgiving, which is a holiday of sharing, a holiday of compassion, it hits you home.”

With a wide smile, Chase Johnson thanked police for his new bike. He looks forward to the day where he recovers and can ride his bike.

Police said there were no charges filed in this incident, and they are grateful that Chase is OK.
