FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. (WSVN) - The United Way of Broward County has stepped in to help military families with back to school shopping.

The foundation’s Mission United Program handed out 370 backpacks filled with school supplies, Thursday afternoon, during a veteran family expo event in Fort Lauderdale.

The program aims to help U.S. Military service members, veterans and their families acclimate to civilian life. “I’m really grateful both my kids got really big backpacks, so they are helping the community and helping my kids out,” said Cynthia Brelsford, the wife of veteran.

Mission United’s Leland Liebe said it’s a time to recognize the whole family. “This is our opportunity, not only to recognize veterans, but to recognize the children that have made an indirect but noteworthy sacrifice.”

The backpacks were filled with all kinds of essential school supplies for the new school year.
