MIAMI (WSVN) - A special unit from the Miami-Dade fire department is getting ready to represent the USA in a global rescue race.

The Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Blackheart Extrication Team will head to the World Rescue Challenge in Brazil.

The team is made up of certified firefighters who are specially trained in the treatment and removal of victims trapped in confined spaces after extreme collisions.

The 2016 group is made up of five men and one woman.

“I feel like a pioneer, I like it,” said Maggie Castro, MDFR Blackheart Extrication Team. “I enjoy it. People are looking and watching, like ‘Wow, there’s a girl.’ I just do what I gotta do, just like everybody else. We’re just here to work as a team and hopefully bring home the prize.”

The team has been competing in extrication competitions since 2012.
