MIAMI (WSVN) - Hundreds of people gathered at Bayfront Park for the annual Fourth of July fireworks show, Monday night.

The display will cap a day of patriotic celebrations in Miami, including a parade in Key Biscayne earlier in the day and a concert in Coral Gables at night.

South Florida residents expressed gratitude for their country on the day it celebrates its independence.

“I’m an immigrant and the Americans liberated us in Europe 60, 70 years ago,” one attendee said, “and I still am very grateful for that.”

The fireworks are accompanied by a kid zone featuring face painting and other kids activities.

“I’m off, and I said you know, let me come out and enjoy the day, so it’s amazing, it’s good, we had fun,” another attendee said.

This year, the fireworks are marked by increased security. Private security is checking bags at Bayfront Park while Miami Police is patrolling on foot, on bikes and in cruisers. Police said they anticipate a safe event.

“This is kind of new, like the police and everything around,” Milagros Calzadilla said, “and I feel safe, especially in these days, because there are people who like to do crazy things, and you never know.”

Fireworks start at 9 p.m. in Downtown Miami. For a list of other July Fourth events, visit wsvn.com/news/local/fun-4th-of-july-events-in-south-florida.
