MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (WSVN) – A 16-year-old Miami Gardens high school student has died after he was shot multiple times while visiting friends around 12 a.m., Friday.

According to Miami Gardens Police, Miami Norland Senior High school student Joshua Cadet was in the front yard of a friend’s home located along the 18000 Block of Northwest Seventh Place, just after midnight. That is when several subjects approached him on foot and opened fire.

Neighbors told 7News they heard a total of 10 gunshots. “I saw somebody lying on the ground,” said neighbor Joshua Zinnerman. “And I just saw police and paramedics and the paramedics just took him away.”

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded and transported Cadet to Hollywood Memorial Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

He later succumbed to his wounds and passed away at Hollywood Memorial Hospital, Friday afternoon.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho said, “I am heartbroken. I am disappointed, I am angered by the fact that one more child has fallen prey to the carnage of gun violence in our community.”

The sidewalk nearby the area where Cadet was shot had outlines of bodies drawn with chalk. Down the same sidewalk, a message, “Don’t touch or die,” was written next to a drawing of a gun.

One student at Miami Norland Senior High said, “You shouldn’t be losing your life at this age. I mean, it’s very, very sad.”

Friday evening, word spread among classmates and friends who were in shock to hear he was murdered.

“He was a good person, he was cool,” said classmate Khamari Louissaint. “It hurts for him to be caught up in things like this.”

Another classmate said, “He was funny. He was very cool to be around. If you wanted to laugh he was there, like he was just a very cool kid.”

Police are still investigating this shooting.
