FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. (WSVN) - A basketball tournament in honor of a fallen police officer tipped off in Fort Lauderdale, Saturday.

The 16th Annual Battle of the Badges, a charitable competition between police departments, took place at Cardinal Gibbons High School. It was held in honor of the anniversary of the passing of Jose Diaz, an officer who made the ultimate sacrifice, back in 2005.

“It’s bigger than basketball,” said Wake County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Jerome Hall, the tournament’s founder. “I think it’s us coming together, showing the families of the fallen officers a sport we love, giving back to them to let them know that their loss is our loss.”

The tournament featured six teams from South Florida departments and two from New York.
