Below is a list of what will be open and closed in South Florida as we monitor Hurricane Matthew. This list will be updated as information becomes available.

Public Schools

Broward County Public Schools and offices will resume normal operations beginning Monday. All activities and events are still canceled for Saturday and Sunday.

Bridge Prep and Smart Starts Schools will cancel classes Friday. They will continue to follow the Miami-Dade Public Schools closing procedures.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools canceled classes Friday. Planned weekend activities and classes Monday will resume.

Monroe County Schools that will be closed and will reopen Friday are listed below:

  • Key Largo School
  • Coral Shores High School
  • Plantation Key School
  • Ocean Studies Charter School
  • Treasure Village Montessori School
  • Marathon Middle/High School
  • Stanley Switlik Elementary School
  • Big Pine Academy

All other Monroe County Schools will be open.

Private Schools

Closed Friday 

  • Westminster Academy will reopen on Monday.
  • Nova Southeastern University’s University School and Mailman Segal Center will reopen on Monday
  • American Heritage School will reopen Monday.
  • All Archdiocese of Miami Catholic Schools in Miami-Dade and Broward counties
  • Gordon School of Beth David Congregation
  • Paladin Academy
  • Ransom Everglades School
  • Pine Crest Preparatory School in Boca Raton and Fort Lauderdale has canceled all after-school activities until further notice. Classes have been canceled Thursday and Friday.
  • Scheck Hillel Community School
  • Nova Southeastern University’s, Nova University’s School

Jewish Community Services will be closed Friday. They expect to reopen all offices Monday morning.

Colleges
Barry University has extended its closures to all campuses, sites and points of delivery through Sunday, EXCEPT for Tallahassee and St. Croix. Updates on the college’s closing available here.  As of Friday, operations at the the school’s Miami Shores campus-excluding the bookstore, library and on-campus food retail units- will reopen Saturday at 10 a.m.

Broward College campus is closed until Monday.

Florida Atlantic University canceled all campus activities and classes through Sunday. Fall break, scheduled for Oct. 11-12 remains in effect.

Florida Career College closed their campus on Thursday to Friday.

Florida International University will resume limited operations Friday. Normal university operations including classes and events will resume Saturday morning

Florida Memorial  University will resume classes Monday Oct. 10.

Florida National University have canceled all activities for Thursday.

Lynn University campus activities and classes are canceled through Sunday. Athletics will resume normal practice schedules.

Keiser University‘s Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Graduate School, eCampus, Pembroke Pines and West Palm Beach campuses was closed until Friday.

Miami Dade College will be closed through the weekend. Normal operations will resume Monday Oct. 10.

Nova Southeastern University campuses throughout South Florida and Puerto Rico are closed until Monday.

Palm Beach Atlantic canceled classes through Friday, and activities in West Palm Beach.

Southeastern College’s Miami Lakes campus is closed until Friday.

St. Thomas University operations, classes, programs and events were canceled and the school will remain closed until Friday.

University of Miami Coral Gables and Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science campuses are closed. The campuses will remain closed on Friday.

West Coast University Miami Campus are closed Friday. All Classes, business operations and events are scheduled to resume Saturday.

Miami International University of Art & Design is closed Friday.

The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale is closed Friday.

Florida Technical College‘s Cutler Bay campus will remain closed on Friday. Business operations will resume on Saturday and classes will resume on Monday.

Courts
All Miami-Dade Courts are closed and will reopen on Monday.

The Broward County Court System is closed until Monday.

Monroe County and the 16th Judicial Circuit will be closed; all three county courthouses will reopen on Friday. Cases will be rescheduled through individual judges’ offices or the Monroe County Clerk of Court. Additional updates, if necessary, will be posted at www.keyscourts.net.

Government Buildings

Fort Lauderdale City Hall is closed Friday.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services in Miami area (Kendall, Hialeah, Oakland Park, Miami) will be closed until further notice. All appointments and ceremonies will be rescheduled. For more information: www.uscis.gov.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers continue to process commercial shipments at the Miami Cargo Clearance Center.

Wilton Manors City Hall and all City Parks will be closed Friday.

Miami City Hall and administrative building will be closed Friday.

Miramar City Hall and Operations offices, services, programs, events, meetings and rentals will be closed Friday.

The Offices of North Bay Village will remain closed until Monday morning.

The Offices of North Miami will be closed Thursday.

The Offices of Weston City will be closed through Friday and expect to reopen on Monday.

The Offices of Fort Lauderdale will be closed until Monday.

The Offices of Monroe County will resume government operations on Friday.

The Offices of Miami-Dade County will reopen Friday.

Deerfield Beach operations will remain closed on Friday and resume Monday.

Hallandale Beach City offices will be closed until further notice.

The Miami-Dade Corrections Department will reopen inmate visitation at 10 a.m. Friday.

The Miami-Dade Health Department will be closed until Monday.

Hialeah’s department of construction, maintenance and public works (water, sewers, solid waste) will resume normal operations Friday morning.

U.S. Postal Service will resume operations in Broward, Miami-Dade, Monroe and Palm Beach counties Friday. To check for updates, go to https://about.usps.com/news/service-alerts/.

The City of Miami Beach will resume normal essential services depending on department. Miami Beach Ocean Rescue, Police and Fire will return to normal operations Friday morning.

State offices in the following counties will be closed Friday: Baker, Brevard, Broward, Clay, Duval, Flagler, Glades, Hendry, Highlands, Indian River, Lake, Marion, Martin, Miami-Dade, Monroe, Nassau, Okeechobee, Orange, Osceola, Palm Beach, Polk, Putnam, Seminole, St. Johns, St. Lucie and Volusia.

Miami VA Healthcare System have closed all outpatient clinics Friday, with the exception of Key West. The Emergency Department and limited services for walk-in patients will be available at the Bruce W. Carter VA Medical Center.

Flights and Travel

Miami International Airport remains open. They will resume flights around 10 a.m. Friday.

Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport will resume flights around noon, Friday.

Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport is will resume operation at 7 a.m., Friday.

Palm Beach International Airport is fully operational.

All American Airlines flights scheduled to depart and arrive MIA, FLL and/or PBI:

  • American Airlines plans to resume reduced operations Friday.
  • AA arrivals to begin at 10 a.m. at Miami International Airport. Departure operations will start at 1 p.m.
  • AA plans to resume operations at Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport at 12 p.m.
  • AA plans to resume regular operations at Palm Beach International Airport at 12 p.m.
  • Check with your airline regarding travel delays or cancellations.

Key West and Marathon airports will be open, but call your airline for delays and cancellations due to weather issues in other parts of Florida.

Miami-Dade public marinas will reopen Friday at 10 a.m.

Miami-Dade Transit including Metrobus, Metrorail and Metromover will resume operations Friday morning at 7 a.m.

The City of Miami Beach trolley service will resume regular operations Friday at 8 a.m.

Bridges in the City of Miami Beach will resume normal schedules at 6 a.m. Friday.

Miami-Dade County cargo terminals are closed until further notice. Drawbridges will open at 6 a.m. Friday.

Tri-Rail services will cease Friday.

Tunnel to and from Port Miami will be closed Thursday.

Monroe County has not closed bridges nor road closures, including the Seven Mile Bridge. Transfer stations will reopen on Friday.

The tolls on Card Sound Road bridge have been lifted. The Card Sound Bridge Toll Booth will reopen Friday morning.

The Snake Creek Draw Bridge in Islamorada will be locked down until 6 a.m. Friday. It will not be lifted for mariner traffic, but is open for vehicle traffic.

PortMiami is open for normal operations.

Miami River, Port Everglades, Port of Palm Beach, Port of Fort Pierce and all other South Florida terminals and facilities will remain closed until further notice.

Cruise ports in Miami, Jacksonville, Fort Lauderdale and Cape Canaveral are closed to ships until further notice.

City of Miami Parking Authority will be closed until Friday.

Miami Beach parking garages are open for residents who are worried about flooding until 6 p.m. Friday. Residents will then need to move their vehicles after that time to another location.

The Coral Gables Trolley service will resume Friday.

Broward County Transit is working to resume services by Friday afternoon, running on a Sunday schedule.

Trash Collection

Broward County

  • Garbage, recycling and bulky waste collection for all of the Broward Municipal Services District will be suspended Friday.
  • The Broward County Landfill will be closed Friday.
  • Hollywood garbage and recycling collection is expected to resume Friday.
  • Margate bulk waste collection has been suspended until further notice.
  • Republic Services in Coconut Creek will not picked up Thursday or Friday. Collection will resume on the next scheduled day.
  • Davie will continue its regular collection schedule Wednesday until further notice.
  • The City of Sunrise will determine if services will be discontinued due to the storm.
  • Fort Lauderdale services are suspended Friday, and will resume Saturday.
  • Trash collection in Pompano Beach is canceled Thursday until further notice.
  • WastePro collection services in Miramar are suspended for Thursday and will be reassessed after the storm.
  • Wilton Manors garbage and recycling pickup has been canceled for Friday. Regular service is expected to resume on Saturday.

Miami-Dade County

  • There will be no collection in the City of Miami on Thursday. Bulky waste pickup will resume on Friday. Recycling will be picked up on Saturday.
  • Miami-Dade garbage pickup will resume its regular schedule on Monday.
  • Miami-Dade recycling collection service for customers whose pickup would normally take place on Thursday will be provided on Saturday. Recycling collection services normally scheduled for Friday will be provided on Sunday.
  • Miami Beach residential garbage pickup is canceled for Friday.
  • The City of Hialeah will pick up bulk trash and recycling on Friday and Saturday. Regular garbage pickup will resume on Monday.

Parks and Museums

Broward parks and libraries closed until further notice.

Miami-Dade County parks and libraries will reopen on Saturday.

Monroe County libraries and parks will be open on Friday.

City of Miami parks will be closed on Thursday.

Virginia Key Beach will be closed Friday.

The City of Miami Beach will allow access to beaches Friday. Park programming and activities remain closed Friday and will reopen on Saturday.

City of Miami parks and recreation programs will be suspended Friday including:

  • Child care centers
  • Recreation centers; after school and senior programs
  • Programs for persons with special needs
  • Pools including open swim, learn to swim and swim team
  • Jose Marti Gym

The North Miami Public Library will be closed Thursday until further notice. North Miami Parks and Recreation Department programs are canceled Friday.

Everglades National Park will reopen Saturday.

The Deering Estate will reopen on Saturday.

Vizcaya Museum and Gardens will reopen Saturday.

The Dry Tortugas National Park will be open Friday.

Biscayne National Park remains closed until further notice. The Dante Fascell Visitor Center was also closed along with the Boca Chita Key, Elliott Key and Adams Key.

Jungle Island will be closed Friday in anticipation of severe weather.

Zoo Miami is closed until Friday. Normal operations will resume on Saturday.

Miami Children’s Museum will reopen Friday at 10 a.m.

Miami Seaquarium will reopen on Friday at noon.

Pérez Art Museum Miami and Verde restaurant will reopen for regular museum hours at 10 a.m. on Friday.

Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami is closed until Friday.

The Museum of Contemporary Art is closed Thursday.

Fort Lauderdale parks and community centers will be closed until Monday.

Park facilities in the City of Coral Gables is closed Thursday. The Wellness Wednesday event, the Dr. William M. Schiff Art Show and meetings scheduled for Thursday have also been canceled. Updates can be found at www.coralgables.com.

Disney World theme parks, water parks, Disney Springs, Universal Studios, SeaWorld, miniature golf courses,  ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex will remain closed Friday. Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party at Magic Kingdom is also canceled Friday.

Animal Shelters

Miami-Dade Animal Services will reopen Saturday at 10 a.m.

Humane Society of Broward will be closed Friday. Updates can be found at www.humanebroward.com

Commercial Businesses

Galleria Mall at Fort Lauderdale is closed Thursday.

Aventura Mall will open at regular hours, at 10 a.m. Friday. Check aventuramall.com for updates.

Sawgrass Mills Mall will reopen at 10 a.m., Friday.

Dolphin Mall reopen at 10 a.m., Friday.

Southland Mall will be closed on Thursday and plan to reopen on Friday under normal business hours, unless otherwise specified.

Boynton Beach Mall will be closed Friday and expect to reopen Saturday at 10 a.m.

All Publix stores in Broward and Miami-Dade have reopened Friday.

Seminole Casino Coconut Creek will reopen at 10 a.m. Friday.

All 26 Whole Foods Market Florida locations will be open during regular business hours. However, the following locations will be closed all day Thursday:

Many Bank of America financial centers in South Florida will reopen on Friday. Some coastal markets along East Florida (Jacksonville, Daytona Beach) and inland markets in Central Florida (Orlando) will be closed Friday. For open locations, https://locators.bankofamerica.com

Pollo Tropical locations in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach is closed Thursday.

Hospitals and Medical Services

Elective procedures at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital main campus will be cancelled for Thursday and Outpatient Centers and Urgent Care Centers in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties also will be closed.

Pediatric Associates will be closed Friday.

Baptist Hospital, Baptist Children’s Hospital, Doctors Hospital, Homestead Hospital, Mariners Hospital, South Miami Hospital and West Kendall Baptist Hospital will remain open. All emergency rooms are open and available for emergency purposes only.

  • All Baptist Health Urgent Care Centers will reopen Friday at 11 a.m.
  • Elective Surgeries/Outpatient Procedures will be canceled Friday.
  • Baptist Health Ambulatory Surgery Centers will be closed on Thursday and Friday.
  • For expectant mothers in labor, follow your family’s plan and go to the hospital.

Jackson Health System’s facilities will remain open. The primary care clinics, the ambulatory care centers, and rehab outpatient clinic will be closed Thursday and Friday. For updates go to jacksonhealth.org.

Leon Medical Centers is closed until Friday morning at 8 a.m.

Cleveland Clinic Florida medical offices in Broward and Palm Beach counties will be closed on Thursday and Friday. Medical office locations include those in Weston, Parkland, West Palm Beach, Atlantis and Palm Beach Gardens. The 24-hour emergency department will remain open.

Florida Center for Allergy & Asthma Care will reopen Friday.

Events

U.S. Coast Guard warns boaters to stay off the water during Columbus Day weekend and annual Regatta.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services have canceled all citizenship ceremonies and immigration appointments that were scheduled for Friday.

Florida Panthers preseason game on Thursday against the Tampa Bay Lightning at the BB&T Center has been postponed.

Exhibition game with Miami Heat on Wheels, scheduled for Thursday at Miami Dade College’s North Campus has been postponed.

TheFitExpo Fort Lauderdale has decided to postpone its expo this week. They will announce new dates soon.

President Obama’s rally and visit to a fundraiser event in Miami Gardens was canceled, but will be rescheduled.

Power 96’s House of Horror Event featuring The Chainsmokers, will be postponed to Friday, Nov. 4. All tickets will be honored.

The Greater Miami Jewish Federation has postponed its Thursday Community Memorial Service for Shimon Peres to next Thursday, Oct. 13, at 7 p.m. at the Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Miami has been postponed to Saturday Oct. 29.

The University of Miami game against Florida State at the Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday remains on schedule. Kickoff is set for 8:14 p.m.

The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk at Marlins Park has been postponed from Oct. 8 to Oct. 29.  Registration for the walk is at 7 a.m. and the walk will take place at 9 a.m.

All City of North Miami events, meetings and programs will be canceled Thursday.

All City of Miami Beach board and committee meetings taking place at City Hall on Friday remain canceled.

El Dorado Furniture’s charity event has been postponed from Oct. 8 to Oct. 29 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Broward College’s Bailey Hall has postponed the screening of “Donald Cried” on Thursday and a performance by the Delray String Quartet on Saturday. A later date has not be released yet.

The 19th Annual Lauderdale-By-The-Sea Craft Festival scheduled for Oct 8 and 9 has been canceled. For information contact 813-962-0388.

The National LGBTQ Task Force has postponed their gala from Saturday, Oct. 8 to Nov. 12. For more information, go to http://thetaskforcegala.org/.
