MIAMI (WSVN) - City of Miami firefighters had to try to save one of their own after he was found unresponsive at the firehouse but were unsuccessful.

The flag at station 14 now flies at half-staff and the department is in mourning after the City of Miami firefighter was found dead in his room at the fire station.

According to officials, a group of firefighters were getting ready to go out on a call when they noticed he wasn’t there. That’s when they went to his room and found him unresponsive at around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Crews tried to revive him, but it was too late.

7Skyforce flew over the scene at Southwest 19th Street near 21st Avenue.

“As you can see, currently where we are, police are on the scene conducting this death investigation,” said Miami Fire Rescue Capt. Ignatius Carroll. “We have the other two firefighters that were being interviewed by police, and right now, we’re just trying to come to grips with the loss of one of our own.”

It is unclear how the firefighter died. However, officers do not suspect foul play.

The station was temporarily shut down while Miami Police investigated.

Investigators interviewed two firefighters while the department struggles to come to grips with the loss.

“Obviously, it’s very hard for them,” Carroll said, “for someone you work with for so long and have to kick into that mode of lifesaving operations on one of your own is very difficult. They did everything that they could, but even those efforts were unsuccessful.”

A fire rescue and police procession lined up to lead the firefighter to the corner’s office.

The firefighter has not been identified, and officials are currently notifying next of kin.
