HOLLYWOOD, FLA. (WSVN) - Swim safety is on the minds of many South Florida leaders and parents as summer approaches.

Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Dem.-Fla., joined members of several agencies at the Driftwood Community Pool in Hollywood.

Kids were given free swimming lessons at the event to stop any preventable tragedies at the pool.

A mother who attended passed on some emotional words of warning. “Always have in the back of your mind that accidents can happen around water, even if they are great swimmers,” said Viviane St. Onge, whose son drowned. “Always, always take precaution.”

That mother’s 3-year-old son drowned in the family’s pool back in 2014.
