MIAMI (WSVN) - A young woman who battled cancer overcame her illness and now dances with the Miami Heat.

For the past year, Lindsey Murray has been living her dream as a Miami Heat dancer. However, what’s more impressive than her dance moves is her perseverance.

“In six months, packed everything up, took the Auto Train down from D.C., and moved to South Florida,” Murray said. “It’s been the best decision, honestly, I’ve ever made because I’m so happy, and it’s exactly what I wanted.”

She made the leap after one of the toughest experiences of her life: surviving cancer. “You’re never really prepared to hear those words come out of a doctor’s mouth,” she said. “As much as you know something might be wrong, you’re not really prepared.”

In 2012, Murray was dancing for the Redskins when she was diagnosed with cancer after discovering a lump in her chest. She was incorrectly diagnosed twice before a third doctor broke the news and found a desmoid tumor the size of a grapefruit in Murray’s chest cavity behind her rib cage.

“I didn’t want my life to change,” Murray said. “I wanted to take care of this as best I could.”

Murray underwent an oral chemotherapy drug call Nexavar as she took on the fight. She also blogged about her experience and never lost her sense of humor.

“I named my tumor Tania. She was my enemy, and that’s how I went with it,” she said. “People kind of connected with me and my story through Tania. I also named my wigs too. When I started losing my hair, I had to wear wigs. It’s not a time in your life where you think that might happen to you, but it did, and when something like that happens, you just face it and try to make the best of the situation.”

Through her support system and her perseverance, Murray beat cancer and is still dancing her way through life. She plans to continue to do so and also has hopes to try out for the Heat dancing team again this year.
