LAUDERHILL, FLA. (WSVN) - Authorities said they were forced to use lethal force on a large pit bull while searching a home in Lauderhill, Friday afternoon.

According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, members of their SWAT team and Violence Intervention Proactive Enforcement Response unit were looking for drugs at the residence located on Northwest First Street and 35th Avenue, just before 2:30 p.m.

Deputies then encountered the dog, who, they said, became aggressive and did not back down when they used a noise flash device designed to deter it. One of the deputies then opened fire on the canine, who died at the scene.

The shooting remains under investigation.
