DANIA BEACH, FLA. (WSVN) - Two Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies are being hailed as heroes for stopping a man from causing an explosion at a Dania Beach gas station.
Officials said Adeilson Jorge was threatening to blow up his car at the Mobil on Griffin Road in Dania Beach, in June. They said he used the gas pump to douse the vehicle and then put a rag in the gas tank, saying he was going to set it on fire.
Two deputies responded, struggling with Jorge but ultimately taking him down.
On Tuesday afternoon, Broward Sheriff Scott Israel awarded the deputies with the Gold Cross Award for risking their lives.
“He had a lighter in his hand, so thinking he was gonna light the car on fire, I charged him, and I went to grab him,” said BSO deputy James Cady. “As soon as I grabbed him, he grabbed for my gun.”
“Soon as I saw him struggling with him, I proceeded to take him to the ground,” said BSO deputy Ed Valderama. “We took him to the ground. That’s when he was kicking, elbowing — just aggressively fighting.”
Both men appreciate the award and said although it’s a nice gesture, they were just doing their jobs.
