MIAMI (AP) — Experts say people who overstay their visas are surpassing uninspected entries as the main source of illegal immigration.

The national discussion on immigration focuses on securing the U.S.-Mexico border with a multibillion dollar wall. But demographers estimate that two-thirds of foreigners who arrived in 2013 and are now in the U.S. illegally actually flew or sailed to the country and were admitted with valid travel documents.

Much of what President Donald Trump says about immigration enforcement centers on those who cross on land. And his executive orders say little about visa overstays, in part because the U.S. government can’t confirm the total number of travelers who remain in the country past the authorized stay limit.
