BAL HARBOUR, FLA. (WSVN) - A South Florida community is saying farewell to a well-respected police chief.

Bal Harbour Police Chief Mark Overton died Thursday from complications from a heart attack he suffered in July.

Overton spent three decades in law enforcement. He earned praise last year when he launched an internal probe that uncovered a massive sting operation that laundered millions in drug cash for criminal groups, but never made a single arrest.

He also earned high marks for his time at the Hialeah Police department, overseeing a dramatic drop in the crime rate there.

Overton was 54 years old.
