POMPANO BEACH, FLA. (WSVN) - Police have released a mother’s call for help after a man carjacked her car while her baby was in the backseat in Pompano Beach.
Earlier this week, she spoke exclusively to 7News.
“I was screaming like, ‘Oh, my baby’s gone! My car’s gone! My baby’s gone!'” she said. “Like, I didn’t know what to do. Bawling on the floor, crying, shaking.”
According to police, her 1-year-old boy was in the backseat of her car when she was carjacked at a 7-Eleven gas station.
“As soon as I got out of the car and walked up on to the step, all you hear is vroom,” Goodwin told 7News. “And the car is like gone.”
Goodwin called 911 as the thief drove away with her baby.
“Oh, my God! Someone just stole my car with the baby in the car!” she told the dispatcher.
“Where did this happen, ma’am, where?” asked the operator.
“I’m around the corner of 7-Eleven. Oh, my God! I was in the store for like less than a second, and I came outside and my car is gone.”
Goodwin could be heard hyper-ventilating as the dispatcher tried to gather more information from her.
“Oh my god, oh my god!” she’s heard saying frantically.
“Ma’am, you need to calm down. What’s your name? You need to calm down, so I can help you, please.”
“How can I calm down? My baby is gone.”
“How old is the baby?”
“He’s only 1 years old. He’s only 1.”
“Is he in the car seat, in the back or the front?”
“He was in the back of the seat. Oh, my God, where is my baby? Oh, my God!”
Goodwin then endured 20 minutes of panic, until the car was found 20 minutes later, abandoned about two miles away from the convenience store with the toddler still strapped safely inside.
Meanwhile, Goodwin was taken to the hospital for a panic attack. The father of 1-year-old Kayden said the baby didn’t even cry.
“I was really relieved. He was great. He didn’t even cry,” Ronnie Cornish said. “BSO said that he didn’t cry until I actually got there.”
Goodwin was grateful the dispatcher and BSO deputies were able to help her.
“Thank God for BSO,” Goodwin said. “I am so grateful. It could have been way worse. It really could have.”
Police have not found the carjacker.
