DAVIE, FLA. (WSVN) - A South Florida gun owner is speaking out and expressing concern days after, he said, a man was caught on video breaking into his truck in broad daylight and taking off with tens of thousands of dollars in firearms and ammunition.
The victim, Dorian Jumper, said he and some friends were on their way to a local gun range, Saturday afternoon, when they decided to stop at a sushi restaurant located in a plaza along the 15700 block of Sheridan Street, in Davie.
Inside the restaurant, the staff announced someone’s blue truck had been burglarized. The thief had apparently punched open the lock of Jumper’s car with some kind of tool.
Jumper said the burglar got away with four rifles, three pistols and a chest rig. He said he owns some of those weapons. “I don’t know where they’re gonna end up,” he said. “God forbid they’re used in some sort of crime.”
Shortly after the burglary, Jumper learned a bystander had secretly captured the entire theft on cellphone video. The footage captured a heavy-set man taking case after case out of Jumper’s Ford F-150 truck and putting them in a Volkswagen sedan. “He did that in the middle of the day. Watching the video, he’s wearing, like, a dress shirt, a tie and khakis on,” said Jumper. “He looks like someone who doesn’t need to be robbing cars.”
Davie Police Sgt. Pablo Castaneda said this is not your everyday car burglary. “Obviously, we don’t want firearms getting into the hands of criminals,” he said. “They get into the wrong hands, we know the damage and the dangers inherent with that.”
Jumper said he has been shooting with relatives for years. “We’re all very aware of gun safety, and we all go to the range all the time,” he said. “It’s pretty safe.”
He shared pictures of his stolen weapons hoping someone will be able to help crack the case.
The victim said he worries about where his guns will end up. “I’m very disappointed, and I suppose, yeah, angered that my stuff has been taken,” he said.
