PLANTATION, FLA. (WSVN) - Twenty-three schools took part in the inaugural South Florida drone competition.

Organized by Plantation High School, the competition showcases middle and high school student’s drone flying skills.

The competition is broken down into three divisions, based on the students’ skill levels.

The competition is dedicated to inspiring students to pursue S.T.E.M-related careers. “We’re trying to teach them about S.T.E.M. —  which is science, technology, engineering and math — and doing it through competition,” said Gustavo Junco, a South Plantation High School teacher. so we’re getting them really excited about these concepts, that will help them out through their careers, through drone racing.”

Through the program, students learn about technology and flight safety — as well as uses for drones in science, agriculture and various other career paths.
