NORTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, FLA. (WSVN) - A 1-year-old boy and two men and were taken to the hospital after, police said, they were shot in Northwest Miami-Dade, Friday evening.
According to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, the drive-by shooting took place near Northwest 83rd Street and 15th Avenue, just before 6 p.m.
First responders found one adult victim whom they transported to Ryder Trauma Center. The second victim fled the scene but was later located and transported to the hospital.
Miami-Dade Police identified 28-year-old Altraun McDonald and 30-year-old Tavares Pollydor as the two adult victims and Dorian McDonald as the toddler.
Pollydor and McDonald were standing in a yard outside of a home when someone inside a BMW traveling northbound opened fire at the victims, according to investigators.
Neighbors who asked not to be identified said McDonald was holding his son at the time of the shooting.
The two adults immediately ran toward the house, and McDonald handed Dorian over to another adult, police said. Pollydor and the elder McDonald both suffered gunshot wounds to the back. The vehicle then fled northbound.
Later during the investigation, a family member holding the crying boy realized that he had also sustained a gunshot wound, neighbors said.
But at first, no one knew it. “The child was constantly crying, and then they noticed the child had gotten shot,” said one woman who lives nearby.
Investigators confirmed the bullet had exited the child’s body.
“An innocent child has gotten shot,” said the woman who lives nearby.
7News cameras captured a paramedic cradling the toddler in his arms and then resting him on the front bumper of a fire truck.
The child was then carried to an ambulance with what appears to be a bandage on his leg. He was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital.
All three victims are listed in stable condition.
A male neighbor said an incident like this underscores the need for the violence to stop. “Young children, all they do is worried about guns and fighting and shooting and all that,” he said. “It’s ridiculous. They need to put the guns down and pick up a book or do something, ’cause this don’t make no sense. You’re killing your own people.”
