DANIA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Authorities have identified the two men killed when their small plane crashed into the Atlantic Ocean off South Florida over the weekend.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office said in a news release Wednesday that 73-year-old Frederick Gautzsch Jr. of Boca Raton and 66-year-old Robert Chartrand of LaSalle, Quebec, died in the crash off Dania Beach. Both men were pilots.

Investigators say the Cessna 172 left Pompano Beach Airpark on Saturday morning with Gautzsch at the controls. The men were flying to a private airport in Key Largo when the plane went down just before 10 a.m. in about 20 feet of water and about 200 yards offshore.

The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the cause of the crash.
