HALLANDALE BEACH, FLA. (WSVN) - An investigation is underway after, police said, a responding officer in Hallandale Beach was forced to open fire on a burglary suspect, early Sunday. A second suspect was arrested hours later.
According to Hallandale Beach Police, they got a call from a resident about some suspicious activity, just before 4:30 a.m. The caller said some people were using flashlights to look inside and break into vehicles on Golden Isles Drive.
When officers arrived at the scene, along the 100 block of Golden Isles Drive, police said, an officer shot the driver of a gray Toyota Corolla who was apparently trying to flee.
The gunfire woke up area residents. “I was sound asleep, and I heard ‘pop, pop, pop, pop,’ five times,” said Sandra Schultz.
Investigators said a second male subject bailed out of the car and took off running, kicking off an intense search by air and by water for more than two hours. “Every police officer was holding a huge gun,” said area resident Elana Yagudaev.
That suspect, identified as 23-year-old Tyler Shuman, was eventually apprehended and taken into custody on the 400 block of Golden Isles Drive.
The driver was transported to Memorial Regional Hospital, where he died. He was later identified as 27-year-old Michael Wilson.
Some residents would later learn their cars had been broken into. “Credit cards, sunglasses,” said Jonathan Belal when asked to name items missing from his vehicle.
Others discovered their cars were struck as, investigators said, the driver of the Corolla was trying to make his getaway.
Police said the officer who shot Wilson in the chest determined he posed a threat. “He was in fear for his life and the life of others in the area, and he felt forced that he had to take action,” said Hallandale Beach Police Maj. Sonia Quinones.
“Now, going to work and seeing something like that, you’ve got to be careful,” said area resident Billy Courtney, who also heard the gunshots.
Corey Clark, the officer who fired his weapon will be placed on administrative leave with pay while an investigation into the incident continues. It remains unclear if either of the men was armed.
Shuman faces charges of murder and burglary. He was denied bond, Monday.
