DAVIE, Fla. (WSVN) — Broward Sheriff Scott Israel is speaking out after he was struck by a vehicle.

Israel said that he is lucky to have sustained only minor injuries when he was hit by a pickup truck’s side view mirror and knocked to the ground, Tuesday night. "A lot of people in America come to work and have a lot worse going on than I do, so I’m here back to work and ready to go," Israel said.

Israel spoke about the accident and the injuries he sustained, which included a broken toe and a bruised elbow. He said that he has been diagnosed with a six- to eight-week recovery period.

Israel also used the time to thank various officials who assisted in his recovery. "I want to thank all the people, the Cleveland Clinic — they treated me last night and today. I certainly want to thank the Davie Fire Department and Davie Police Department," he said.

The Broward Sheriff was struck while he was jogging in the area of Hiatus Road and 42nd Court.

Israel said that the woman driving was cooperative and stayed with him throughout the ordeal. "Although I might not be happy with the way she drove, she was an incredibly nice woman," he said. "She stopped to render aid."

Sheriff Israel said he will now stick to running in parks from now on.
