MIAMI (WSVN) - A beloved member of the 7News family is receiving a big and well-deserved honor.

Investigative reporter Carmel Cafiero was presented with a proclamation by Miami-Dade County Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz at Wednesday morning’s meeting.

Cafiero retired in June after 43 years here at Channel 7.

The mayor and commissioners declared Sept. 7, 2016 “Carmel Cafiero Day.”

“A big thank you to Channel 7 for giving me the opportunity to be a part of this crazy community we have,” Cafiero said. “The good, the bad and the ugly, but fortunately, today is one of the good days, and I’m very honored.”

Cafiero, who is a New Orleans native, was the first and only female journalist at our station when she started in 1973.

“We can count on one hand, the champions of communication that were women,” said Miami-Dade County Commissioner Sally Heyman.
