Summer in SoFlo isn’t just swimsuit season. It’s stretchy pants season too. It’s a time when locals get to chow down at some the 305’s favorite restaurants. The benefit is you’ll have a full belly, and you won’t have an empty wallet.

Last night, the Westin Colonnade in Coral Gables was popping — all thanks to “Taste of the Gables.”

Marina Foglia: “Taste of the Gables is the official launch to our Ninth Coral Gables Restaurant Week where we are featuring 23-plus restaurants, who we are providing sampling and tastings to everyone who attends.”

With chefs, a DJ, and a photo booth, the event was about fun and food.

Angie Santibanez: “I love Taste of the Gables. I think it’s a great event to bring people together — with food, with drinks, with just having a good time. I love it. ”

Coral Gables’ nickname is “The City Beautiful.” But this month, it’ll be bountiful, too.

Marina Foglia: “This is our version of Miami Spice. Basically, all the restaurants, they provide three-course meals, pre-fixed prices for you to enjoy.”

And, it should really be called Restaurant “Weeks,” ’cause it runs from June 6 – 26.

Marina Foglia: “It is not only one week, it is three full weeks where you get to experience 40-plus restaurants.”

The event was the kick off, but it was also a chance for restaurants to show off.

Marina Foglia: “It’s like a teaser for you to come and see what you like, and then you can go afterwards and experience the full meal.”

Prices during Restaurant Week range from $18 to $40.

Marina Foglia: “Each restaurant selects their own pricing, and they offer a 25 – 30 percent discounted price on the regular menus. All restaurants have it for dinner, some have it for lunch as well.”

There are Gables Staples, like Bulla and Books & Books … and newbies like Loui and Trust & Co.

Pablo Zitzmann: “I think that it puts exposure of a new restaurant out there. It shows people that don’t know where you are and where you are located, what is the restaurant about.”

If you missed out on Taste of the Gables — don’t sweat it. Starting June 6, you have three weeks to catch up on some of the best Coral Gables has to offer.
