At theaters this weekend, we not only get a new movie, but a new music star! Andy Samberg stars as an over-the-top pop star in “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.” And the character is good. Like, he’s really good. So good, in fact, that he’ll tell you himself.
Meet Conner4Real, and that’s “4Real” with the number 4, by the way.
Andy Samberg: “Conner4Real is played ably by yours truly.”
(Cast claps)
Andy Samberg: “Gentlemen, you shouldn’t have. Chime in, chime in. Say how good I was!”
Jorma Taccone: “He’s really good in the movie.”
Andy Samberg: “Oh, Jorgus!”
Jorma Taccone: “What a good actor.”
So yeah, Andy Samberg plays Conner, who is the pop star of all pop stars.
Andy Samberg: “We wanted to create a character that is sort of an amalgam of all of the pop stars forever, and sort of smush them into one dude and then make that dude like a comedic version of that, so he’s actually a dumb person and crazy in a lot of ways.”
Andy Samberg (as Conner4Real): “And never take the stairs ’cause they’re often unsafe. You only live once. Don’t let it go to waste.”
The guys from Andy’s real life comedy music group “The Lonely Island” star as part of Conner’s ridiculous entourage.
Chris Van Vliet: “Is it true that the more people you have in your entourage, the more famous you are? Connor has 32.”
Andy Samberg: “In our experience, that has not always been the case. Timberlake, for example, shows up by himself. He’s just like us, in that he shows up by himself. Every other way, he’s not. He’s super talented.”
The movie makes fun of the over-the-top life that some celebrities live, but for these guys, they still can’t believe this is what they get paid to do.
Chris Van Vliet: “Have you guys had times as The Lonely Island where you’re like, ‘I can’t believe we got that guy on a song?'”
Akiva Schaffer: “Constantly.”
Andy Samberg: “Every time.”
Akiva Schaffer: “Every time they start recording and you hear their voice, like, you’re looking at them in the studio, but they start singing and you’re like, ‘That’s the voice!'”
Jorma Taccone: “No, you look at each other and you’re like, ‘Why are they doing this?'”
(Laughs)
Andy Samberg (as Conner4Real): “You know it takes a village to make me look dope.”
The cameos in this movie are insane: Snoop Dogg, Mariah Carey, Adam Levine, Pink, Seal, and the list goes on and on.
“Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping” opens in theaters Friday, June 3.
