This time of year, there are two types of movies: ones that are gonna make a lot of money and those that are gonna win a lot of awards. Tonight we’re gonna look at both.

But we start with an awards season darling.

“La La Land” already scored big at the Critics’ Choice Awards and Golden Globe nominations. And I went to la la land — aka Los Angeles — and talked with stars Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling.

Emma Stone (as Mia): I just heard you play and I wanted- (kiss)”

It’s the most talked about movie of awards season — but what exactly is “La La Land?”

Emma Stone: “It’s an original musical that takes place now, but has a lot of nostalgic kind of energy.”

Ryan Gosling (as Sebastian): “You could just write your own rules, write something that’s as interesting as you are.”

The movie centers around a love story with two people trying to make it in Hollywood. Emma Stone plays an aspiring actress and Ryan Gosling is a jazz-loving piano player — and man, does he play!

Ryan Gosling (as Sebastian): “City of Stars, are you shining just for me?”

Chris Van Vliet: “The fact that you learned how to play piano for this was absolutely incredible. Was there any part, any discussion, where it was like ‘Learn some of it, but we’ll get a double for the rest of it?'”

Ryan Gosling: “Damien was very clear that he wanted to shoot not only the piano scenes but also the dance scenes and the songs in one shot.”

“La La Land” is unlike any movie you’ve ever seen before. It has a great story, beautiful visuals and even if it’s not your thing, the singing and dancing sequences are amazing.

Ryan Gosling: “The logic that you have to accept in this movie and in musicals is this is how they feel.”

The movie is directed by 31-year-old Damien Chazelle, who has only directed two movies — this… and “Whiplash,” which won three Oscars. Not a bad way to start your career.

Chris Van Vliet: “What do you think is one every day task that would be made that much better by throwing a musical score behind it?”

Emma Stone: “Everything. Wouldn’t that be wonderful, if you walked into a room the energy would change and it’s like, ‘I know right now that I am going to meet someone with weird energy because it’s like ‘vrr vrr vrrr.'”

Emma loved the idea! I loved the idea! Ryan… Not so much.

Chris Van Vliet: “I feel like everything would be made better with singing.”

Ryan Gosling: “Really?”

Chris Van Vliet: “Maybe not.”

Ryan Gosling: “I think it would make it worse.”

“La La Land” is in now theaters.
