Miles Teller beat drums in the Oscar winning movie “Whiplash,” but now he’s beating dudes in “Bleed For This.” And he got in incredible shape for this boxing movie. And you know Chris, he’s no stranger to a challenge, so he figured he’d see if he could do the same training Miles did — even if it meant he might get punched in the face. Repeatedly.
“Bleed For This” is the true story of boxing champion Vinny Pazienza, played by Miles Teller.
Miles Teller (as Vinny Pazienza): “I feel like I should be on a box of Wheaties doing a Gatorade commercial.”
He’s on top of the world, until a car crash leaves him with a broken neck.
Miles Teller: “It’s an incredible true story about probably one of the greatest comebacks ever.”
Miles Teller (as Vinny Pazienza): “I know exactly how to give up. You know what scares me Kev? It’s that it’s easy.”
Vinny had that “never say die” attitude, and so did Miles Teller who got into the best shape of his life for this role.
Miles Teller: “So I went from 188 pounds to 168 pounds. I got my body fat down to six percent, no by the end of this movie, you’ll be able to mess some dude up if he’s talking to your girl.”
I like the sound of that, so I headed to South Beach Boxing, where Vinny trained when he was here in South Florida.
Jolie Glassman: “Everything we teach here is the training of a boxer, so that means pound for pound full-body training.”
I got my hands wrapped and we started with the basics.
Jolie Glassman: “You always want a little bend in your knees. So your jab to me is the most important punch because it’s setting up everything else that’s going to follow.”
And I learned those basics, really aren’t so basic.
Chris Van Vliet: “This is like a dance that I am not very good at.”
Jolie Glassman: “Well boxers are good dancers.”
Chris Van Vliet: “I gotta admit, we’ve been punching in the mirror here for five minutes and I’m already sweating.”
We put on the gloves and let those fists of fury fly!
Jolie Glassman: “Work on keeping your elbows pointed down and bringing them back to your face.
Chris Van Vliet: “OK. So much to remember here.”
And I learned that boxing isn’t just about throwing punches … it’s about not getting punched.
Good thing we weren’t actually fighting, or I’d be laying on the mat right now. But thanks to some expert training, my punches starting having a bit of pop to them.
